More and more research is confirming that laughter needs to be taken very seriously! Laughter has been shown to have an enormous number of benefits - for mind, body and spirit. It boosts health, promotes relaxation, wellbeing and positivity and acts as a kind of 'social glue' - bringing people together and aiding communication and social interaction.

Shinetime’s Leela Bunce was very pleased to be the laughter expert for BBC One’s experimental series The Science of the Young Ones, in an exciting laughter experiment run in conjunction with the University of Westminster and overseen by presenter Dr Michael Mosley.

The experiment showed that laughter dramatically reduced the stress hormone cortisol. Long-term raised levels of cortisol can be a causative factor behind numerous diseases, so keeping cortisol low is very beneficial!

The celebrities in the show had found that they generally laughed less as they had got older. This is true for most adults. Children laugh about 300-400 times a day, adults about 10-15 times a day. As such, restoring laughter as an intrinsic part of everyday life is hugely valuable.
